Open Source LMSs

Introduction

In my last article, I have introduced a free open source Learning Management System (LMS) called TinyLMS. In this article, I want to recommend 6 other open source LMSs that are available under the GNU Public License.

1. PfP LMS (http://pfplms.sourceforge.net/)

The PfP LMS is a Web-based learning management system (LMS). The PfP LMS can be used to compose and publish courseware via the World Wide Web. No HTML programming, or scripting skills are necessary when using it. The PfP LMS aims to be fully SCORM conformant in the future. Learning objects created with the PfP LMS are stored in a way that allows the creation of SCORM compliant content in the future.

There are 4 different roles in the PfP LMS 0.2. These are, namely, the Student, Instructor, Designer or Administrator. The PfP LMS provides different user functions for each of these roles.

2. .LRNTM (http://www.dotlrn.org)

.LRN is an open source enterprise-class suite of web applications and a portal framework for supporting course management, online communities and collaboration. .LRN comes with fully working versions of many of the applications needed for a community or collaboration-based web site. It supports user registration and administration, groups, portal, file-storage, calendar, discussion forum, FAQ, news, personal home page, and survey. The figure below shows the structure of LRN.

3. Interact (http://cce-interact.sourceforge.net)

Interact is an Online Learning and Collaboration platform developed by the Christchurch College of Education, New Zealand. It is designed to make it easy for students and lecturers to interact online. It is based around the constructivist and vygotskian views of teaching and learning. Interact allows the ability to share content between course sites. This means that lecturers only need to update the course content in one place and reuse in other courses. Students and Lecturers can access all new course material and forum postings from one central place. There is no need to check every forum for new posts. Students can be given control of 'group' areas to add and manage their own materials. The system is very flexible and it can be used as a full intranet/portal and not just for online course management.

A demonstration is available at http://interactdemo.cce.ac.nz. The figure below shows the screenshot of Interact.

4. ATutor (http://www.atutor.ca)

ATutor is an Open Source Web-based Learning Content Management System (LCMS) designed with accessibility and adaptability in mind. ATutor will run on any system with PHP and MySQL installed. ATutor complies with international accessibility standards and thus allows access to all potential learners, instructors, administrators and those with disabilities accessing the Web with assistive technologies

A demonstration is available at http://www.atutor.ca/atutor/demo.php. The figure below shows the screenshot of ATutor.

5. Eledge Open Learning Management System (http://eledge.sourceforge.net)

Eledge Open Learning Management System is designed to provide the framework for creating a web site for online instruction, including student registration, authentication, content creation, quizzes, exams, homework graders, report uploads, instructor gradebook, class calendar, and online help. Eledge consists of a collection of Java servlets and a MySQL database to store information and course content.

A demonstration is available at http://learn.chem.utah.edu/servlet/Eledge.Home. The figure below shows the screenshot of Eledge.

6. Moodle(http://moodle.org)

Moodle is a course management system (CMS). Without modification Moodle runs on Unix, Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, Netware and any other system that supports PHP, including most web host providers. In Moodle, data is stored in a single database. MySQL and PostgreSQL are best supported, but it can also be used with Oracle, Access, Interbase, ODBC and others. Moodle is also available in 34 languages.

A demonstration is available at http://moodle.org/course/view.php?id=10. The figure below shows the screenshot of Moodle. With so many Open Source LMSs to choose from, the end-user will be spoilt for choices when he or she wants to set up an LMS. Our advice to people trying out the LMS for the first time is really to download one LMS and then try to deliver an online course. If accessibility is an issue, then the ATutor can be an excellent choice.
